The Three-Year-Old Evangelist

“Mommy, why Jesus did not complain when He was on the cross?” Mishca asked on our way down from Tagaytay last July 6. That question caught us off guard. We didn’t know how she knew that Jesus never complained about his predicament, but instead asked the Father to forgive his tormentors.

We told her that Jesus did not complain because He was thinking of her. He loved her so much that He willingly suffered so that He could save her from sin, hell and a life of torment. Every time we pray with her at the start of a brand new day, Mishca would have a list of other people to pray for. “Also my friend Yasmin. Also Angkong and Ama (Grandpa and Grandma),” she’d request.

Last night on the way home, she was seated beside her grandmother at the back of the van. This is what we overheard:

“Ama, the Bible is God’s word. You must read the Bible because Jesus is waiting for you to read it. He misses you when you don’t read it.

“The angels of God are big. They protect you, so you don’t have to be afraid. Jesus is the most powerful man on earth. He died on the cross and he rose again to save you, so that you don’t have to go to hell, because He loves you.”

Then she started singing, “Jesus loves me this I know. . . .”

When grandma started singing along, she scolded, “Don’t sing the song!” Oops!  Little songbird didn’t like to share the spotlight with grandma.

We all had a good laugh.

Never underestimate the ability of a child to grasp or explain eternal truths . . .

But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children who were crying in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the son of David!” they were indignant, and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Did you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies you have perfected praise?’” –Matthew 21:15-16
