Heart of the Matter

C.S. Lewis presents a very compelling reason to thaw a heart in deep freeze:

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken.
If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.
But in that casket–safe, dark, motionless, airless–it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. . .
The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers of love is Hell.”

  1. HOw’s my heart? Literally? Hopefully it’s not clogged up with cholesterol/plaque! hehehehe! Figuratively….well, I’ve picked up the pieces….mending, I suppose.

  2. “Thus, by far, it is better to have loved than not at all.” Keep on loving, and definitely.. far beyond the romantic senseรœ

  3. Thanks for posting this… I guess God is telling me to allow myself to be open again… What you wrote struck me. Oh well, here goes nothing!

  4. how’s my heart? tough question…you know how deceitful those things get…hehehe. right now my hearts a bit closed up, a bit tender and honestly a lil aftraid. i’ve miscalculated on a friendship. right now we’re back down again on the flatlands of acquaintanceship. whether we make it back to the mountaintop of comradeship…i dunno. its a bit of a climb and my acquaintance seem to have chosen a different path…but…the heart is an inveterate optimist…a fundamentalist where hope is concerned…perhaps

  5. my heart? right now it’s broken. but im hopeful it will soon mend… either on its own, or through someone else.

    ikaw, how’s ur heart? ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. hi j.c.,
    nice quote.
don’t ever let your heart go to hell!
    hahaha
I wish I can laugh about this post two-three months from now ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. hi jenny,
I came across this phrase in one of the essays I’ve been reading (check it out at:
    http://www.paulgraham.com/opensource.html

anyway, it just reminded me of you hehehe here goes:

“We’re funding eight new startups at the moment. A friend asked what they were doing for office space, and seemed surprised when I said we expected them to work out of whatever apartments they found to live in. But we didn’t propose that to save money. We did it because we want their software to be good. Working in crappy informal spaces is one of the things startups do right without realizing it. As soon as you get into an office, work and life start to drift apart.

That is one of the key tenets of professionalism. Work and life are supposed to be separate. But that part, I’m convinced, is a mistake.”

  8. Woah!Thank you, people, for your two cents. It means a lot, because I know it takes guts to spill your guts here. Bravo to you all!

Now I figured it would be unfair to ask about the status of your heart and not answer my own question.

So to Noreen: My heart is fine. I am learning to say “NO!” to resentment, fear and bitterness. I am learning to say “NO!” to the ghosts of the past. I have forgiven all the people who have intentionally and unintentionally hurt me. I am plunging into life and love head-on. Because life is meant to be a celebration!

Joey, I hope it works out. I’ve been praying for you. Matters of the heart are tricky, but with God’s guidance, it’ll be worth it.

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.We love because He first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And He has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.”-1 John 4:18-21
